PROGRAMS

Next Up NoVa offers Community Arts Classes in  visual and media arts provide classes, workshops, and camps in a variety of hands-on art forms including photography, video production, filmmaking, social media content creation, video editing, Audio & Video podcast production, and more mixed media classes for children and adults, from 12 years old & Up, and all skill levels. Our mission is to offer the Northern Virginia community accessible and affordable visual arts experiences, along with spring break and summer art camps, teacher/artist professional development, internships, job shadowing opportunities, and college/career preparation. We enhance the arts opportunities in our region through a variety of partnerships with businesses, non-profit organizations, artist collectives and other arts & community organizations.

All of our classes are taught by industry professionals with over a decade of experience in their particular field. These classes focus in hands-on learning experiences with the opportunity to practice what we preach every class. Our methods provide practical application in real-world working scenarios that provide a creative framework for future success and troubleshooting in real-time. 

Our Creative Arts staff is second to none, with a track-record of success in each discipline that enables Next Up NoVa to provide a new and unique experience for aspiring artists to grow quickly and confidently. The class curriculums and execution have been tested for the last 5 years to ensure the quality and success for our students. The experience, talent, and dedication of our instructors bring to the table means that there is nothing like this anywhere in the country! 

ADULT CLASSES

01 Adult Photography

DURATION: 5 weeks 9/6/24-10/4/24

SCHEDULE: Monday 9-10:30AM Friday 11:30am-1PM

INVESTMENT: $250

WHAT WE’LL COVER: It is never too late to learn digital photography, one of the most relevant art medias we have today. Discover how to hold, set, and control your camera. Learn how to compose a shot for high quality, consistent results. Learn the basics of camera operation, camera settings, photo composition, framing, lighting, and capture the best photos you can. Explore the fundamentals of photo editing and digital image management to add interest to your photos and learn how safely handle your files. 

Required equipment: a DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with at least 6.0-megapixel resolution, and a SD card for your camera.

03 Youth Photography

DURATION: 5 weeks - 9/9/24-10/4/24

SCHEDULE: Friday 4-5:30PM

INVESTMENT: $200

WHAT WE’LL COVER: Digital SLR, Mirrorless Photography, Lightroom, Sports Photography, Food Photography, Studio Photography, Lighting, and much more.

Our photography classes introduce students to the digital world of photo, including Digital SLR and Mirrorless Photography Basics, Introduction to Lightroom, Sports Photography, Food Photography, Studio Photography and Lighting, and much more. As with all classes at Next Up Nova, it is taught by industry professionals and students will get hands on experience each class. 

04 Videography

DURATION: 5 weeks 9/9/24-10/4/24

SCHEDULE: Tuesday 6:30-8PM

INVESTMENT: $200

WHAT WE’LL COVER: Digital videography in modern media with dslr, mirrorless, and cinema cameras, camera settings, lighting, audio, and video editing in a variety of formats and disciplines. 

Our Video Production class is the staple of our creative arts curriculum. VP will introduce students to all 3 phases of video production— Pre-production, Production, and Post-production. Students will learn camera settings, framing, filming techniques, and editing in a variety of environments including, short films, commercials, sports, social media ads, TV shows & Podcasts, music videos, and more. 

Students will work in a hands-on environment, using the equipment themselves and will work together in groups to accomplish some tasks and projects

02 Social Media Video Content Creation for Adults

DURATION: 6 weeks 9/9/24-10/11/24

SCHEDULE: Friday 1:30-3PM

INVESTMENT: $400

WHAT WE’LL COVER: Learn how to make videos come to life and use it to create high-quality & effective videos for social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube. 

Video content is the one of the best tools we have today to get more attention, more customers, or build a social media community. Whether for work, branding, or your own personal projects, video is a must-have tool for promotion and communication in today’s landscape. 

Learn basic video production fundamentals that can be used with any dslr, mirrorless, cinema, or smartphone camera. Learn the basic video editing techniques with virtually any software from mobile to desktop versions. Use free apps like CapCut, Adobe Premiere Rush, Canva, iMovie and many others to create short videos for your portfolio right on your smartphone. Open to adults 18+ of all levels.

Required equipment: a DSLR, mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with at least 6.0-megapixel resolution OR a smartphone and a SD card for your camera, if you choose the dslr or mirrorless camera option.

YOUTH CLASSES

04 Studio 508: 12 Week Filmmaking Intensive

WHAT WE’LL COVER: Learn the world of filmmaking with our extensive 12-week program. Developed over the last 10 years in order to take your ideas from your mind to the page to the screen with precision and confidence. Taught by industry professionals with years of experience in running internship & artist mentorship programs, as well as, classroom instructional experience. Our hands-on learning approach creates a positive and real-world environment to learn the art of filmmaking from script to screen.

Hands-on Learning

Our program is designed to teach you the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to start your journey in the filmmaking industry. You'll work with our experienced instructors to gain knowledge into the pre-production process, cinematography, editing, and sound design. We emphasize practical application in real-world situations and hands-on projects. You'll have a choice to create short films, music videos, social media ads, mini-documentaries, and commercials, all while developing valuable experience in all aspects of filmmaking.

Modern Equipment

Utilize the latest and most flexible filmmaking equipment, sure to enhance the creative process and execution. Our program provides access to professional-grade cameras, lighting/audio equipment, and editing software, in order to provide the tools to bring cinematic visions to screen.

A Community of Filmmakers

Find a community of other passionate filmmakers and creatives where you'll share ideas and collaborate. This collaborative environment will foster an enhanced learning experience and help develop a supportive network of young filmmakers.

Upon successful completion of the course, we are available to use our connections in the community to establish internships, job-shadowing, and networking opportunities. These are all essential aspects of the filmmaking industry and our instructors are here to assist in everything from college recommendation letters to internships and expanding your network for future opportunities.

Personal cameras and laptops are encouraged for consistency, but NOT required.
